Emergency services were called to Wellington Airport after passengers on an incoming flight noticed a chlorine smell.
There were 65 passengers the Air New Zealand flight from Auckland when it landed just before midday.
Police said emergency services were called as a precaution.
Firefighters and officers searched the plane and found that a bottle of bleach had leaked in an overhead locker.
There were no delays from the incident, the airport said.
