Vodafone faces court action after overcharging customers

The Commerce Commission is taking court action against Vodafone for breaching the Fair Trading Act by overcharging some customers.

It says Vodafone launched the Red Essentials plan at $79 a month in 2013, and lowered the price to $69 in January the following year.

But it says the company failed to apply the $10 discount to customers who had signed up to the plan from its introduction at the original price, causing about 15,000 customers to be overcharged.

Vodafone says it made a mistake and has refunded 98 percent of affected customers.
