A deadline for landowners to gain approval for fast-track Auckland housing projects could be extended, to ensure thousands of homes get built.
Eleven landowners fear they may not make the 15 September date to get through the process that will let them build in the Special Housing Areas created by the Auckland Council and the government.
The areas are supposed to help ease the city's housing crisis.
Labour Party MP and independent mayoral candidate Phil Goff has written to Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith asking him to fix the problem.
Dr Smith and the council say they are prepared to consider extending the deadline, but are giving no guarantees of approval for any proposed housing developments.
