Fed Farmers warns of more forced dairy farm sales

8:51 am on 1 June 2016

More forced sales of dairy farms are looming in Northland as banks scrutinise farm balance sheets, the local Federated Farmers head is warning.

Northland president John Blackwell said some farmers and sharemilkers had quit the industry in recent months and more would have to sell up this winter.

He said banks had supported most dairy farmers but the downturn had gone on for so long that more would end up going under.

Mr Blackwell said many dairy farmers were depressed, and Federated Farmers was holding a series of free dinner meetings around the region to provide company and support for them.

Today is Gypsy Day, when sharemilkers traditionally take to the roads heading for new positions on farms all over the country.
