An international advocate for workers' rights has been appointed New Zealand's next ambassador to Myanmar.

Steve Marshall has been working for the United Nations agency the International Labour Organisation in Yangon for the past eight years.

He was previously the head of the New Zealand Employers' Federation.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully said New Zealand's engagement with Myanmar had expanded significantly since the country embarked on political and economic reform in 2011.

He said Mr Marshall was charged with further developing the relationship and growing the aid programme.
