The government is considering giving more money to Te Puea Marae in Auckland, which has been taking in homeless people.

Te Puea Marae began offering shelter to the homeless last month and has since launched a support programme for those looking for help, called Manaaki Tangata.

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett said she does not have time at the moment to visit the marae herself, but she will meet with the chairman of the marae tomorrow.

She has asked officials to look at extra support for the marae.

"Actually the Māori Party raised it with me the other night so I said I would have a look at it."

Te Puni Korkiri has already given the marae a $10,000 grant.
