Barfoot & Thompson says it experienced its busiest March in five years.

Auckland's largest real estate agency says it sold 1246 houses in March, an increase of 63% on the previous month and 16% on the same period a year ago.

The average sales price of $571,000 was 6.5% higher than in February, but 1.7% lower than in March last year.

However, chief executive Wendy Alexander says Barfoot & Thompson's new listings are almost 18% lower than at this time last year, and are at the lowest level for a March in four years.
