Todd Energy is planning to build a peaking power plant in Taranaki.

The privately-owned company's subsidiary, Bay of Plenty Energy, intends building a 100 megawatt open cycle gas turbine generation plant south of New Plymouth, and next to an existing Methanex facility.

Todd says the plant will provide electricity mainly during periods of high demand but could also run as a base load plant when hydro and wind facilities are unable to generate power.

Todd says it will shortly lodge consent applications with Taranaki Regional Council and New Plymouth District Council.
