The businessman and meat industry entrepreneur, Graeme Lowe, has died aged 77.

A Companion of New Zealand Order of Merit, Mr Lowe was inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame two weeks ago.

Born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Graeme Lowe arrived in New Zealand when he was 23.

He began his career in the meat industry in 1964, purchasing Dawn Meat Ltd in Hastings, with two partners.

The Lowe Corporation was established that year, and Mr Lowe led the business for many years and remained actively involved in the business until his death.

Mr Lowe gave millions of dollars to Hawke's Bay charities and organisations.

At full capacity the corporation provided jobs to more than 1500 people around the country.

Mr Lowe died peacefully on Sunday afternoon at his Havelock North home in Hawke's Bay, surrounded by his family.

A family spokesperson says funeral arrangements will be published once they are confirmed.
