Bata New Zealand is looking to double its gumboot production with the installation of $1 million worth of new machinery.

Its parent company, based in Switzerland, has purchased the equipment to go in the factory at Owhiro Bay in Wellington.

New Zealand operations manager Tony Harmer says Bata has produced a unique mould for this market and variations for certain industries such as fishing, dairy and construction.

He says there will be no job losses as a result of the new machinery.

Mr Harmer says production could double to more than 150,000 pairs per year and hopes to export the new gumboots to other markets such as Australia and the Pacific.
