Wilson elected as Fonterra board chairman

The board of Fonterra has elected a new chairman to take over at the end of this year.

John Wilson, a current director, has been on the board since 2003.

Mr Wilson lives on a dairy farm near Te Awamutu and manages a dairy farming business in South Canterbury.

He is a former chairman of the Fonterra's Shareholders' Council and a director of Turner and Growers.

He will replace Sir Henry van der Heyden at the dairy cooperative's annual meeting in December.

Shareholders' Council election

The Shareholders' Council, which represents the interests of Fonterra's 10,500 farmer shareholders, has elected southern Waikato farmer Ian Brown as its chair.

Mr Brown stepped into the role eight weeks ago to replace former chair Simon Couper, who resigned because of his concerns about the Trading Among Farmers plan - in particular the shareholders' fund.

Philip Palmer, of Wairarapa, has been elected as deputy chair.
