The sporting goods and homeware retailer Briscoe Group expects its new online business will be contributing significantly to its profit in a year's time.

The company, which operates the Rebel Sport, Briscoes and Living and Giving chains, expects to make about $13 million in the six months to the end of July, an increase of 26%compared with last year's $10.3 million profit.

Managing director Rod Duke says the company has performed well during the period despite a significant commitment of resources and expenses to generating new streams of online business from its websites.

He says the sites have only been operating since just before Christmas and so far they have either met or exceeded expectations.

Mr Duke says in six to 12 months he expects that online sales will significantly contribute to the company's profitability.

He says he believes the company's market share has significantly increased over the last nine quarters.
