The NZX 50 index rose 21 points, (0.58%) to close at 3661 on turnover of $46 million.
Fletcher Building rose 2 cents to $6.57 and Chorus rose 6 cents to $3.25.
Stock unchanged at the close of trade included Telecom ($2.74) and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare ($1.93).
Contact Energy fell 3 cents to $4.87, NZX fell 4 cents to $1.10 following a 28% slump in its half year profit, while Cavalier dropped over 5% - down 9 cents to $1.66 - following a 75% drop in its profit for the year to June.
Among retailers, The Warehouse finished down 1 cent at $2.68, and Hallenstein Glasson fell 9 cents to $4.30.
At the end of the local business day, the NZ dollar was at 80.91 US cents, 77.43 Australian cents, 51.55 pence, 64.28 yen, 0.6559 Euro, and the TWI was 73.03 points.
