Offshore markets flat

Wall Street was flat on Monday after six weeks of gains, while the European Central Bank quelled speculation that it's planning a bond-buying programme.

The Dow Jones Index fell 4 points, or 0.03%, to close at 13,272, while the Nasdaq Composite was unchanged at 3076.

In Europe the FTSE 100 in London fell 0.5%, the DAX in Frankfurt 0.1% and the CAC-40 in Paris 0.2%.

The Nikkei index in Tokyo was up 9 points to 9171.

The Australian 200 Index was down 6 points, or 0.1%, to 4364, and the NZX 50 rose 21 points, or 0.6%, to close at 3661.

At 8.30am on Monday, the New Zealand dollar is at 80.86 US cents, 77.41 Australian cents, 51.46 pence, 64.16 yen and 0.6549 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 72.95.

Brent crude oil was trading at $US116.26 per barrel and gold was at $US1620.43 per ounce.
