The total number of people staying in hotels, motels and holiday parks fell in September.

Official figures show nights spent in short-term commercial accommodation dropped 1.4% for the month. This follows a 2.6% rise in August.

The monthly result was led by a 4.7% drop in the number of international visitors and a slight drop in domestic travellers.

Hotel, motel and holiday park numbers all declined in September compared with the previous month, while backpacker numbers increased.
