A US venture capitalist has identified local technology firms as a possible investment prospects while on a short trip to New Zealand with other IT startup founders and investors.

Dave McClure, founder of Silicon Valley-based business accelerator and seed fund 500 Startups, is behind the "Geeks on a Plane" tour.

The invitation-only tour is for startups, investors and executives to learn about technology markets in other countries.

He and 17 others have been in New Zealand and listened to pitches from a number of local firms.

Mr McClure said he is interested in web or mobile-based startups working with consumers around commerce, or small businesses offering productivity tools.

He said he will hold further talks with at least one unnamed Wellington firm.

The investor said the business that's done that's done the best for his firm is Wildfire Interactive started by New Zealander Victoria Ransom.
