IMF - Argentina data dispute

12:30 pm on 18 December 2012

A row that could lead to Argentina being thrown out of the International Monetary Fund is about to intensify.

In September, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde threatened the country with a "red card", meaning potential expulsion from the agency and the G20, if it does not do more to produce reliable statistics on its inflation and gross domestic product.

The IMF is to issue a report into what steps Buenos Aires has taken to improve the reporting of its economic figures.

Argentina is accused of inaccurately stating growth and inflation data.

Dan Rosenheck of The Economist said nobody knows what the inflation rate in Argentina really is.
