Christmas shopping spending picks up

7:06 pm on 21 December 2012

Paymark figures show spending on electronic cards has lifted by 4.7% over the three weeks to 20 December compared with the same period last year.

The company processes about 75% of all New Zealand electronic transactions.

It says just over $3.2 billion went through its network between 30 November and 20 December, an increase of nearly $150 million compared with last year.

Paymark chief executive Simon Tong says spending has been particuarly strong over the last two days with transactions to the value of $220 million processed on Thursday and a similar level on Friday.

He says the results should be welcomed by retailers as they come up to the last three full shopping days before Christmas.
