Tongariro crossing tourism lifts after eruptions

A Tongariro Alpine Crossing tourism operator says recent eruptions haven't deterred visitors from coming to the area and business is actually up on last year.

The eruptions occurred in Mt Tongariro's Te Maari crater in November and August last year.

The track from the Te Maari crater onwards has been closed since November, meaning visitors can only go halfway up and then they have to turn around and come back the same way.

Stewart Barclay is the owner operator of Adrift Outdoors, a company which takes people over the crossing, and says that since the eruptions, the one-way track can at times become crowded with hikers.

But he says despite the track not being it's usual length, people are still coming and numbers are actually up on last year.

He says fewer people were willing to spend money and come to the crossing this time last year because of the global financial crisis.
