Fonterra chief financial officer Jonathan Mason is stepping after four years with the dairy cooperative.
Fonterra says it has started a global hunt for his replacement, though Mr Mason has agreed to stay with the cooperative until the end its financial year in July.
Mr Mason, an American national, has been a major architect of the cooperative's capital restructuring and Trading Among Farmers.
Mr Mason says he plans to stay in New Zealand.
