Kathmandu seeks new sites in Australia

Kathmandu says it's looking for more than 40 sites in Australia as part of its growth plan.

The clothing and outdoor goods retailer made a profit of $10.3 million in the six months to the end of January, compared with $6 million in the same period a year ago.

Revenue rose 13% to $166 million, mainly due to expansion across the Tasman, which accounts for two thirds of sales.

While costs rose due to higher rentals of flagship stores, Kathmandu managed to reduce expenses as a proportion of sales.

Kathmandu chief financial officer Mark Todd says the company has to be smart about offering the right products to the right markets, particularly given the varying climates in the regions it operates in.

He says the plan is to grow to around 170 stores in Australia and New Zealand.

"We have over 40 targeted locations that we're still to find sites for in Australia.

"Most of those sites arise from opportunities in malls using a smaller format alternative, or in regional Australian centres, or in some markets in Australia where we remain under-penetrated such as Adelaide, West Australia in particular."

Mr Todd says Kathmandu will also be reassessing its lease renewals for stores.

He says online businesses has grown more than 50% year for both New Zealand and Australia but is still less than 5% of the sales.

Shares were unchanged at $2.45 on Tuesday.
