A South Canterbury district has outstripped the rest of the country with the strongest economic growth in the past year.

The figures from Business and Economic Research show the Selwyn District experienced major employment growth in 2012, beating national employment figures by about 9%.

Employment grew by 1% nationally while in Selwyn District, employment grew by 9.5%.

Selwyn District mayor Kelvin Coe says the 1200 new jobs created in the region over the last year confirm that Selwyn is the place to be.

He says the district had a large population influx after the Canterbury earthquakes and 12,000 new sections are available for development.
