Boutique brewer Tuatara has gained its first institutional shareholder with Rangatira, a Wellington-based investment company, taking a 35% stake.

The two companies won't disclose the amount of the investment but Tuatara co-owner and general manager Sean Murrie said the funds will allow the company to grow.

Rangatira chief executive Ian Frame said Tuatara ticks all the boxes for Rangatira.

Mr Murrie, Carl Vasta and Fraser McInnes founded Tuatara in 2000 and it currently produces more than 1 million litres of beer each year.

Tuatara currently exports to Australia, Singapore, China, the United States and Europe.
