Telecom to pay more than half development levy

5:50 pm on 27 June 2013

The Commerce Commission has confirmed Telecom will have to contribute more than half of what telecommunication companies will have to pay towards the industry's development levy.

The $50 million levy is used to pay for non-commercial telecommunications infrastructure such as the relay service for the deaf and hearing-impaired, broadband for rural areas, and improvements to the 111 emergency service for the 12 months to the end of June.

Companies, or groups of companies, earning more than $10 million per year from operating part of the public telecommunications network, whether fixed or wireless, have to make a contribution.

In total 26 companies are liable, including Vodafone and Chorus.
