Shoppers spent more than $5 billion on their electronic cards last month - up 1.2% on May spending.

Statistics New Zealand says there were 106 million transactions across all sectors in June, with an average value of $51. The total amount spent on all transactions was $5.4 billion.

Spokesperson Blair Cardno says more was spent in every industry in June, compared with May, and

although some of the increases were quite small, the last time this occurred was in August 2012.

Fuel and hospitality spending had the largest rises of the retail industries - up 3.5% and 1.7% respectively.
