Service sector activity brisk in June

Activity in the services sector remained brisk in June, driven by strong sales and levels of new orders.

The BusinessNZ Performance of Service Index fell one point to 55 in June from May but Bank of New Zealand economist Doug Steel says that's well within the usual monthly fluctuations and the more important message is that activity remains strong.

An index reading above 50 points indicates expansion.

The first six months of this year is the best first half since the survey began in 2007.

Mr Steel says that overall, services sector growth is trucking along quite nicely.
