Electricity greenhouse gas emissions up

12:15 pm on 19 July 2013

Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation in New Zealand rose by nearly a quarter in the first three months of the year.

Power generators are included in the ETS.

The rise in emissions meant power companies had to buy more UN carbon offset credits or Government-issued emission permits to comply with the scheme.

The spike was caused by a drought that saw electricity generated from hydro plummet 16% in the same period, as companies used more fossil fuels to make power.
