Shares in Facebook have leapt as it beat earnings expectations and grew its revenue from mobile advertising by more than 41%.

Facebook, the world's largest social networking company, reported profits of $US333 million in the three months ended June, the BBC reported.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said the work it had done in the mobile sphere was showing good results.

A BBC correspondent said the company had ramped up its mobile phone businesses because people were increasingly checking Facebook on their phones instead of their PCs, with revenue from mobile advertising rising to $US1.6 billion.
