Australian job advertisements down further

7:34 am on 7 August 2013

The latest survey reveals newspaper and internet job advertisements in Australia have fallen for the fifth consecutive month.

The survey by ANZ Bank shows there was a fall of 1.1% in the number of job advertisements in July, to an average of 128,417 each week. The result is 19% lower than during the same month last year.

Internet advertisements dropped by 0.9% in July, and newspaper ads fell by 6.8%.

ANZ chief economist Ivan Colhoun said changes in the advertising industry, including a shift away from newspaper job ads, had contributed to the decline.

The ABC reports he believes the result is in line with the bank's projections of an increase in unemployment.

Australia's unemployment rate is currently at 5.7%. The next official employment figures will be issued on Thursday, for July.
