Markets still dropping

The Dow and the S&P 500 on Monday extended their losses from last week while Apple and BlackBerry kept the Nasdaq index afloat.

The Dow Jones index closed down 5 points at 15,421

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2 points, to close at 1,689

However, the Nasdaq Composite Index up nearly 0.3% at 3,670

Earlier, the FTSE 100 in London closed down 0.14%, but the DAX was up 0.25% and the CAC-40 in Paris was down 0.12%.

The Australian 200 Index closed up more than 1% at 5,109, boosted by gains across the resources sector. But the NZX 50 fell 0.3% to close at 4,522.

At 8.30am on Tuesday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 80.08 US cents and 87.56 Australian cents. Earlier, it was trading at 77.33 yen, 51.74 pence 0.6016 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 75.33.

Brent crude oil was up slightly and is trading at $US110.29 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1336.76 per ounce.
