Wellington International Airport Ltd says international visitor numbers have increased by 35% since 2009, including the 6% increase in the last 12 months.
It expects passenger numbers will reach more than 5.5 million this year which will make Wellington the second largest airport in New Zealand.
The airport's manager of airline development, Mike Vincent, says Australian visitor spending in the Wellington region has increased by 36% over the last four years.
