Bathroom fittings and tapware company Methven says it had an eye firmly on its international markets when it headhunted its British-based new chief executive.

The company's board expects David Banfield to drive the next phase of its growth in Europe and Asia.

Mr Banfield will be based in New Zealand and takes over from departing chief executive Rick Fala from the beginning of next year.

Mr Banfield was the UK managing director of the water-filtering business Brita from 2000 to 2010, before going on to lead the company's growth strategy in Europe, Asia and North America.

Methven says he oversaw the establishment of Brita as Britain's market leader in water filtration, including tapware, which included strategic partnerships with appliance categories.

Methven chairman Phil Lough says Mr Banfield has a track record of building and growing a successful international brand in an industry relevant to its own showers and tapware.
