Michael Hill International says it is confident of growth this year, despite weak sales in its New Zealand and United States stores in the first quarter.

The jeweller told shareholders at its annual meeting on Wednesday that it is rebranding for the first time, with a new look rolling out in its 270 stores in Australasia and North America from early next year.

Chief executive Mike Parcell says the company is also planning to open 10 new stores in both Australia and Canada.

He says New Zealand is mature but there is still growth to come in Australia.

Mr Parcell says the company has been investing in Canada for some time and learning the market and it's confident that the earnings will start to generate from the Canadian market with size and scale.

Meanwhile, the company says it is close to choosing a global advertising agency after spending a year working on the project.

Chairman Sir Michael Hill says the rebranding is a result of its struggle to gain traction in the United States, where it has just eight stores.
