Govt regulation inconsistent - Gaynor

A business commentator says the Government's regulation of the telecommunications and electricity sectors is inconsistent and confusing for shareholders.

Milford Asset Management executive director Brian Gaynor says mixed messages have been given about the reduced price set by the Commerce Commission for the Chorus copper telecommunications network.

He says the Minister of Communications initially said the price was too low, but then commissioned an independent review of Chorus's finances.

At the same time, Mr Gaynor says, there has been limited regulation of the electricity industry, where prices have risen steadily.
