Services activity hits highest level since 2007

Activity in the services sector is at its highest level in six years, driven by an expanding economy.

The Bank of New Zealand - Business New Zealand Performance of Services Index rose 2 points to 58.2 in October, led by new orders and sales.

A reading above 50 indicates the sector, which include retailing, hospitality, property and business services, and health, is expanding.

BNZ senior economist Craig Ebert said that, unlike the last time the index hit this high in November 2007, the bank did not see any any reason the strength in the sector would not persist.

"The economy is picking up ... things are going from strength to strength, and there are all sorts of dynamics that could lock into place to make this thing really take off," Mr Ebert said.

"The global backdrop, even though it's not what you'd call strong, it is still mixed but it is still positive, and so we're not forecasting the global economy to come horribly unstuck the way it did during the GFC (global financial crisis)."

The Reserve Bank is expecting economic growth of about 3% for the year to September.
