March guest nights down

The number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation and holiday parks in New Zealand fell 1.6 percent in March after a 2.4 percent increase in February.

The Government Statistician said the trend for North Island guest nights has flattened, but is at a record and South Island guest nights are showing a gradual recovery towards pre-earthquake levels."

In March, North Island guest nights fell 2.6 percent, and South Island guest nights fell 1.6 percent.

Domestic guest nights fell 1.8 percent while international guest nights fell 1.5 percent.

Guest nights fell for motels, hotels, and holiday parks, but rose slightly for backpacker accommodation.
