Container expansion at Tauranga

12:41 pm on 22 August 2008

Port of Tauranga is expanding its container operation to meet an increasing demand for cargo.

The port operator will make room for another 400 container slots on land adjacent to its terminal by September.

Ports of Auckland's revealed this week that it wants to buy Port of Tauranga's container business, a move which is seen as a signal it's ready to revive merger talks.

However, Port of Tauranga chief executive Mark Cairns says the expansion's unrelated to Auckland's intentions. He says the port has an additional 29 hectares of land set aside for its future expansion.

Port of Tauranga is due to issue its annual results on Thursday.
