Graeme Hart still tops rich list after $2bn drop

5:48 pm on 28 July 2016

Businessman Graeme Hart remains at the top of the country's rich list, but his wealth has been knocked lower because of his debt-laden businesses.

The former panelbeater, who has built a packaging empire, has a $7 billion fortune - as assessed for the National Business Review's annual list - but it was down from $9bn last year.

The list's authors said the bankruptcy of his American car parts business showed an exposure to debt that might affect other parts of his businesses.

Singapore-based investor Richard Chandler was second with $4.2bn, the Todd and Erceg families retained the next two spots, and Auckland property magnate Michael Friedlander rounded out the top five.

Prime Minister John Key was ranked 175th-equal with $60 million.

The list covers 190 individuals and families with a minimum wealth of $50m and a collective wealth just under $60bn.
