Johnston's has a fleet of 40 coaches, with depots in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, and has been operating in New Zealand for about 80 years.

Go Bus managing director Calum Haslop said the acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, was a good fit and would strengthen its own charter and tour business.

"This acquisition will round off our business operations significantly, giving us the ability to offer a complete range of bus and coach services.

"Our expectation is that both businesses can learn from each other to create an overall stronger transport operation, improving the quality of passenger and client services and experience," he said.

Mr Haslop said Johnston's would remain a separate entity to Go Bus.

The deal was conditional and was expected to be completed before September.
