The companies that run Marcs and David Lawrence in New Zealand and Australia have appointed voluntary administrators.

Most of the shops are in Australia, but there are ten shops in New Zealand employing 42 staff.

A director, Malcolm Webster, said the move was necessary because of a number of factors including deteriorating sales, general market conditions and poor cash flow.

Employees have been paid up until the end of January and superannuation payments up to the end of last year.

A director of administrator Rodgers Reidy, Geoffrey Reidy, said the businesses would continue to operate for now.

"We intend to review the operations of the businesses and continue to trade while we market the businesses for sale," he said.

Staff were being advised of their positions by their managers.

Last year, children's clothing firm Pumpkin Patch was placed in administration and receivership, reflecting tough trading conditions.
