Currency forgery awareness urged by Reserve Bank

9:26 pm on 19 May 2010

The Reserve Bank says people need to be aware of counterfeiting attempts of New Zealand, despite currency forgery being low compared to international standards.

Currency head Alan Boaden says several counterfeit court cases in the past month in the North Island are a timely reminder that forgery does exist in New Zealand.

Mr Boaden says the incidence of counterfeiting in New Zealand - just below one per million notes in circulation - is very low in international terms.

While the chance of receiving a counterfeit note is low, Mr Boaden says, care should still be taken by everyone.
