Commissioner wants smart electricity grid

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment believes the country needs to have a more advanced electricity grid to cope with changes in the system.

Parliament's finance and expenditure select committee heard more submissions on Wednesday on the Government's Electricity Industry Bill.

The Commissioner, Jan Wright, wants it changed to ensure the country has a smart grid, using modern digital technology to gain better control of the system.

Dr Wright says in the future, electric cars will be recharged on a large scale and other pressures will come from domestic users becoming electricity suppliers, with cheap, renewable energy systems.
