Rebstock to stay on to help commission head

9:29 am on 3 April 2009

The Commerce Commission will not lose its former chairwoman Paula Rebstock, who will stay to help get through the workload the regulator faces in the telecommunications sector.

The future of Telecommunications Commissioner Ross Patterson remains uncertain after he stood down to seek treatment for alcoholism last year.

Commerce Minister Simon Power has confirmed Mark Berry as head of the commission for the next 18 months, and Ms Rebstock says she has agreed to help out.

Ms Rebstock says it was her decision to step down from the commission, rebuffing speculation that she was forced to resign after her organisation took strong action against some of the country's biggest companies.

The commission is expected to give a report on Mr Patterson's status to Mr Power soon.
