A bi-annual survey by Statistic New Zealand shows $2.1 billion was spent on R&D in 2008, compared to $1.8 billion in 2006.
Primary industry netted the most, with 19% of all R&D being carried out for its benefit.
Manufacturing, health, environment, and information and communication services each accounted for about 10% of R&D expenditure in 2008.
