Unemployment in Australia jumped by 0.3 percentage points to 5.7% in May after a surprise fall in the April jobless numbers.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1,700 jobs were lost during May, leaving a total of 655,000 Australians out of work.

However, the number of full-time workers fell 26,200, offset by a 24,500 increase in the number of people working part time, indicating that many businesses are looking to cut hours before they cut jobs outright.

The figures show that 13.4% of Australians are working fewer hours than they would like to.
