7:54 pm on 10 July 2009

The New Zealand market was slightly lower at the close of trade on Friday. The benchmark index fell 3 points, or 0.1%, to 2738.

Top stocks were mixed. Telecom was down 3 cents to $2.67, while Fletcher Building rose 5c to $6.55 and Contact Energy was up 1c to $5.63.

The Australian share market closed in positive territory driven by gains in the materials sector on the back of stronger commodity prices.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 30.8 points, or 0.82%, at 3,794.1 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 29.2 points, or 0.78%, to 3,790.6 points.

Japanese shares ended marginally lower on Friday, falling for an eighth consecutive trading day as the strength of the yen fanned caution about the economic outlook, dealers said.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index dropped 3.78 points, or 0.04%, to 9,287.28. The broader Topix index of all first section shares lost 1.41 points, or 0.16%, to 872.50.
