ExxonMobil and Todd Energy have been granted an extension to their drilling licence for oil and gas in the Great South Basin.
The firms now have until October 2011 to decide whether to drill any exploratory well, a year longer than originally set down.
Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee says it is not unusual for permit holders to change their work programme given the risky nature of energy exploration.
