Bids closed on Friday for companies wanting a slice of the Government's $1.5 billion fund for building a new generation broadband network.

The rollout is expected to benefit 33 centres in New Zealand during the next decade.

Telecommunications Minister Steven Joyce says the new network will allow businesses to take advantage of improving technologies such as faster downloading and video-conferencing.

Vector and Telecom are among companies who have submitted proposals to help build the service.
