Higher fares again at Qantas promised

Qantas says it will raise fares again after the global financial crisis pushed them to record lows.

The airline has posted a net profit after-tax of $A58 million for the first half of the financial year - down from $A210 million (72%) a year earlier.

The ABC reports sales and other income have fallen from about $A8.1 billion to $A6.9 billion.

Chairman Alan Joyce says Qantas has done better than most of its rivals, but the company's survival depends on higher fares.

Qantas is also removing first class seats on most of its planes.
