Wall Street up at close on Friday

8:44 am on 1 March 2010

News that the US economy grew by more than expected in the fourth quarter helped Wall Street shares to close a little higher on Friday.

However, lower housing sales and a large loss posted by the AIG insurance group, stiffled gains.

The Dow Jones index ended the week up 4 points, or 0.4%, at 10,325. The Nasdaq Composite was also up 4 points, at 2,238.

The Australian 200 Index closed up 43 points, or 0.9%, at 4637.

And the NZX 50 closed up 4 points, or 0.14%, at 3156 on turnover of $59 million.

At 8am on Monday: the New Zealand dollar was trading at 69.85 US cents, 77.75 Australian, 45.97 pence, 62.08 yen and 0.51 20 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 64.56.

Brent crude oil was trading at $US76.71 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1116 per ounce.
